Ford jumped ahead of Toyota

ford-fiesta-rs Ford Motor Company announced that the company’s February sales were up by more than 43%, beating out General Motor’s monthly sales for the first time in more than a decade.

In total, Ford sold 142,285 vehicles during the month of February. Ford said that they sold a total of 334 more cars than General Motors during the same time period. General Motors (NYSE: GM) were up a total of 12% for the month.

Ford also jumped ahead of Toyota in February to become the market leader in the U.S. The company finished 2009 in third place in terms of U.S. sales behind GM and Toyota.Toyota Motor reported a 9% drop in U.S. sales in February from a year ago as the Japanese automaker continued to suffer from recall problems. Meanwhile, rival Ford Motor vaulted ahead of Toyota and GM to claim the market lead in the U.S.

February was a beneficial month for Ford across the board. Car sales increased by 54%, sport utility sales were up 39% and sales of trucks increased by 36%. Among the various Ford brands, Ford  sales were up 46%, Lincoln sales were up 19% and Mercury sales were up 24%.

“The strength of our new products and Ford’s leadership in quality, fuel efficiency, safety, smart design and value are resonating with customers,” said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, U.S. marketing sales and service.

“The good news is we have even more new products and fuel-efficient power trains coming this year, and we expect our progress to continue.”
